Announcements 9/6/12

VIKING BAND TUTORING — Next week we begin our normal tutoring and study hall routine. After school from 2:45 — 3:45, tables will be set up in the band hall for students to do homework and get tutoring from their band peers. A list of available tutors for various subjects will be posted in the band hall. We encourage all students to take advantage of this time.

PERFORMANCES — We will be participating in the community pep rally on Monday Sept. 24th at 7pm. This pep rally will be held at Cravens field and is open to the public. This is a great time to show school spirit! On Oct. 2nd we will participate in the annual Dean Corey Band night. This is another great chance to support the band. We will know or approx. performance time as we get closer to the date.

FOOTBALL GAME #2 / HOMECOMING — We have our second football game this Friday. I hope to see a lot of parents in the stands supporting the Vikings! The students should be in the band hall at 5:00 with summer uniform (white socks and shoes!), instrument, music/flip book, sunscreen and bug spray already applied. We will perform at 7:00 sharp. At halftime we will participate in the homecoming ceremony. After the game, everyone is invited to the CiCi’s on Eastchase pkwy. The booster club has arranged for us to have a pizza party from 10:30-midnight and the cost is $5.

DICKEY’S BBQ FUND RAISER – Come eat at the Dickey’s BBQ on Ballpark Way and Lamar, Wednesday, September 12th and support the Drum Line. Drum line members will be working for tips to raise money to be used towards the purchase of needed equipment. Come any time between 5 and 8 pm and look for your drum line members! We will be receiving 15% of all receipts that are put into the Lamar receipt bucket, plus tips. So pass this on to your friends and families and come hungry!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED — We have many events this fall that require parent support. To help with band events, you must be and AISD approved volunteer. The application can be found at After approved, go to the band website to find out more.

PASSBOOKS (update) — Prizes have been announced! The top seller will receive a $100 visa gift card. The second place seller will get a $50 gift card and $25 for third place. Passbooks have been handed out and students are expected to sell 3 passbooks at $30 per book. This is a big fundraiser for the program and we hope it continues to be successful. We encourage students to sell as many passbooks as possible.

VOICE OF LAMAR (update) — We have filled the announcer position for the year. If anybody is interested in helping out as a sub for the band announcer at football games, let me know.

FORMS AND FEES (update) — Band forms and fees are due. Students that did not come to band registration should get this in to a director ASAP. Students will not travel with the band if they have missing forms. Students should also have paid their band fee.

SUMMER UNIFORM (update) — Please contact Joan Miller or Mrs. Burum ( if you have summer uniform issues.

TEXTING WITH IZIGG — The band has started a new form of communication: text broadcasting with iZigg. This program allows the directors to send important updates via text. This will mostly be used in situations where information needs to be sent quickly. Examples might be an alert when we are only 10 mins from Lamar after an away football game, or the band made finals at a competition and will be performing at a new time. To sign up, just send a text to the number 90210 and put LHSband in the message. You will then receive occasional messages about band events. If you ever want to opt out, just send STOP in the message.
