MARCH 4 MUSIC – The March-A-Thon was a GREAT success! The kids did such a great job. It was surprisingly fun. Thanks to the leaders for the fun with water. Thanks to the parents for their participation. There should be tons of photos available. Look for #march4music on social media…should be some Lamar band stuff in there. We can still take donations for our 50 laps that we completed this morning. Continue to spread the word and share the following link www.march4music.org/lamar We have already brought in over $2300!

PICTURE DAY – On Monday August 17th, students will take their photo in their marching band uniform. Mr. Ip will take individual and section photos. The band staff will not be available the entire time due to AISD meetings. We need a few parents to help facilitate the picture taking process. Please contact Mr. Lang or lamarbandboosterclub@gmail.com if you can help. All students in the section must arrive at the same time to facilitate the group photo. Purchasing the individual photos is optional, but we need every student to attend so we can use these photos in the football game programs and the group composite photos that go on the walls in the band room. The schedule will be: Flutes 8:30am, Clarinets 9:00am, Saxes & low reeds 9:30am, Trumpets 10:00am, French Horns 10:30am, Trombones 11:00am, Euphoniums 11:30am, Tubas 12:00pm, all percussion 1:00pm, color guard 1:30pm, drum majors 1:45pm. Please arrive at least 15mins early to allow time to put on the uniform.
FLUTE MASTERCLASS – AISD fine arts has brought in Dr. Mary Karen Clardy for a very special masterclass this Wednesday. She will be teaching the All-State / All-Region / All-City audition music. The class will take place at Martin HS from 3:00pm to 4:00pm on Wed. Students that attend will be allowed to come late to marching band. Attendance is critical for any student wanting to advance to the region or state level. All high school flute players are invited and this is provided free by AISD.

SECTIONALS – The student leaders and our marching instructors will be working this week in the mornings on reviewing what we have learned the past two weeks. This is a very good time for those who want extra help to come work on their drill or music. Students that have been ill, injured or out of town should use this time to catch up. Leaders will contact sections about times and days for this extra help. Feel free to reach out to any leader about getting this extra tutoring.
SCHEDULES – As students register for school, I am learning of many schedule errors. I have contacted the counselors about many of the issues already. If you see any problems, please let me know. All band students should be double blocked unless they have special situations approved by Mr. Lang.

ATTENDANCE AND TRANSPORTATION – Attendance to all marching band rehearsals and performances is 100% mandatory. This is the performance grade for the first six weeks of school. Work is not an excused absence. Transportation problems should be worked out in advance. Any students carpooling must have parent permission and if riding with another student/parent, please provide gas money.

CALENDAR UPDATE – Football game dates and marching contests have been updated this week with a couple of minor changes. I have also added all marching rehearsals to the calendar. Dean Corey is Oct. 6th.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL & EXHIBITION – On Friday August 21st from 8:00pm-9:00pm, we invite everyone to our first public performance of the 2015 season! The band and drill team will perform their first “half-time” performance. We want as many parents, family and friends to attend. Afterwards, we will have ice cream!!!

BAND CAMP – I am pleased to report that the first week of summer marching band was a great success! We have learned the first 30 drill sets and memorized the music for the 1st movement of the show! The students have been working very hard and handling everything we ask them to do. Mr. Messemore and Mr. Hunter have returned and the color guard is looking incredible already!
Rehearsals shift to a 4:00-8:00 schedule this week due to teacher inservice meetings during the day. ALL REHEARSALS ARE MANDATORY. (SEE THE HANDBOOK)
We encourage students to wear very comfortable athletic clothes during practices. We strongly encourage sunscreen, sunglasses and some sort of hat. All students must have a water jug for all rehearsals. We recommend a 32oz minimum size jug.
Summer Band Student ”To Do” List
• Hydrate––Plenty of water and sports drink all day long
• Proper Diet. Stay away from processed foods/carbonated drinks/etc
• Be rested––Keep a regular sleeping pattern
• Be studied––Have strength academically
• “The pain of discipline now, or the pain of regret later”
